The Tree and the Wind, is a collection of Early Classical and Baroque Music for enhancing Learning Environments. Produced by Enrique "Hank" Feldman, the President and Director of Education for the Fostering Arts-Mind Education Foundation, this is the recommended CD for Life Learning Techniques in preschool and K-12 setting. It is also recommended for any situation in which a relaxed and serene environment is the goal.
This CD was engineered by Jim Brady at Jim Brady's Recording Studio in Tucson, Arizona and is dedicated to the generation of children to come.

When using in a classroom or home learning environment use tracks 5-11 (slow tracks) with paced, rhythmic delivery related games and learning situations. Also, use these tracks during meal times, transition times, and nap times. These tracks are between 52 and 66 beats per minute. Breathing and playing "in time" with this music is highly encouraged to sharpen focus and reduce stress. These slower tracks are also effective with children of special needs, as related to their ability to focus over periods of time and be efficient in general. Use tracks 1-4 and 12-18 (fast tracks) with dramatic delivery related games and learning situations. Also, use as background to artistic activities and as foreground when "surfing the words." These tracks are between 112 and 126 beats per minute. For more details on usage, go to FAME Foundation and email us with questions related to on-site training or attend our annual learning conference at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, Arizona every June.

Vida Rica - Enrique "Hank" Feldman & Daniel "Sly" Slipetsky

The majority of Vida Rica hints strongly at the heritage of Enrique, which permeates his "voice," whether it be via the tuba, his scatting, or piano playing. The passionate, earthy and ethnic mixture of his own background sings strong (Argentina, Spain, Southern Russia, Mexico, Native American, and Israel). Joining him on this CD is the stellar talent of "Sly," whose abilities at the piano are intuitive, and full of risk, while his tuba playing ranges from be-bop to Funk bass lines.

Yisrael Voraita is an ancient Chasidic melody played over a Latin Songo-like groove with numerous and seamless transitions in style, as you will also hear on other selections. Unique in this selection is Hank's multi-phonics which create a mysterious ambience.

Quemado, a seductive Gypsy-like Tango, opens with the statement (sung in Spanish) "...the challenge of passionate love...is to understand your own soul." During this original song, there are three sung stanzas. The first describes Passionate Love as delicious and dangerous; the second one "Logical Love" is described as not very passionate, and states that an empassioned soul cannot live without trying to find true love. The third stanza states, "True Love... is like having the sun inside your mouth...it must be released and allowed to grow into a beautiful life. And when your life is full of this kind of love, this is what it sounds like" Each vocal stanza is then answered by an instrumental or vocal solo which transcends the poetry.

Touch, an original R&B song, features Hank's sultry lyrics and the fat dark bass lines of Sly. Fe, another original song, was a five minute piece when Hank first performed it at the 1997 ITEC in Riva del Garda, Italy to the great joy of humanity consuming Pizza and Grapa in their Piazza! Today, Fe (Spanish for "Faith" in general) has become an epic journey which is a musical description of the Joy of Life, the challenges of Life, and the passion which can be imbedded in both. Unique in this song is the muted piano and the scatting through the tuba mouthpiece.

The remaining selections remain passionate, unique and energetic arrangements of well known Latin Jazz and Jazz works. Vida Rica, also the title of the CD, translates to "The Good Life." This edgy Songo migrates to a Salsa groove over which you hear lyrics sung in Spanish describing "The Good Life" in terms such as "There... is the only place I wish to live...... growing with you is the life for me...and learning the dance with you!"

CD Review by Sérgio Carolino*

I was waiting for the new CD of famous USA tuba player and composer Hank Feldman and his talented partner "Sly" Slipetsky. By the cover of “VIDA RICA,” a gorgeous Carabean beach, I knew that I was in for a Latin Music experience, meaning dance music from Salsa (Cuba), Tango (Argentina), Flamengo (Spain), Songo and Afro-Cuban grooves. A very Ethnic recording!

The first track immedieatly put a big smile on my face. A big tuba intro with lots of multiphonics, which Hank demonstrates a total control of, is followed by a Latin Songo groove played by Sly on the piano. Later on Hank delivers an energetic “scat” solo. What fantastic feeling and phrasing! The entire disc has a great feeling and Groove! With no doubt…a very fresh approach to the tuba playing.

The disc contains Feldman originals and some arrangements by himself and Sly of songs by “Chucho” Valdês, Velásquez, Gillespie and Monk.

The third track, “Touch,” is an original by Hank in an R&B style. On this tune Sly starts by playing a Bass Line, while Feldman sings and plays piano, wrapped up with a very fine tuba solo by Sly.

Sly (an amazing pianist and fine tubist) and Hank have the uncanny ability to play off each other’s nuances, enabling them to create spontaneous musical moments. One of many examples is on Monk’s “ Straight, No Chaser.” After a wonderful piano solo, Sly plays a powerful bass line on the piano while Hank entertains with a frenetic and energetic scat solo before returning to the theme again, this time singing.

In this recording, Hank demonstrates all his talents by playing tuba, piano, composing/arranging and shows us a “surprise,” by scatting and singing with all the phrasing and groove of the greatest jazz singers! A fantastic disc that I highly recommend to everyone who loves jazz and latin music! A must in every CD collection! Fine Job!

*Yamaha Artist Sérgio Carolino is currently principal tuba in the Oporto National Orchestra and professor of Tuba and Chamber Music at the National Superior Orchestra Academy (Lisbon). He is constantly on the move, giving masterclasses and performing across the world.
